I have been looking for a meteorite watch for a while. There are quite a few micro brands and some mainstream ones selling them. But the prices and designs vary enormously. I did some research on Zelos and found it has a great reputation both for its products and after-sales service. As frustrating as its limited series runs are it makes each model more special. The movement is a well-known Seiko one which I already have in a Seiko Samurai so I know its bullet proof. The history behind this particular meteor (known as the Muonionalusta) makes it even more special being the oldest on earth, landing here a million years ago - though perhaps having been out in space for 4.5 billion years.
The design is different with the details like the yellow second hand a red tip. The lume is fantastic and very bright. While you won't always be looking at your watch in the dark, it is handy in the half light indoors and outside to be able to see the time clearly. This watch is excellent for a quick and legible glance at the time. The date window is slightly too small (for my eyes) and would benefit from being a little larger and/or having a cyclops. It depends on your eyes and if you need glasses for close vision. It's not a deal-breaking detail for me as the rest of the watch is just "wow!"
The meteorite dial reveals its Widmanstätten pattern from different angles and always gives you something to look at. The bezel made of the same material helps set the watch off as most other watches I looked at did not have a meteorite bezel and dial, just a dial. The lume is on the numbers on the bezel too though you don't really need them with the ultra bright batons and hands to look at on the main face.
I bought his watch from Seriouswatches as Zelos had sold out and Seriouswatches had several left at the end of the production run. They let me choose the one I wanted. It just so happened that it was the last one and had, for me, the best combination of dial and bezel - since meteorite dials vary from watch to watch even from the same manufacturer. I would definitely buy again from Seriouswatches. Their service is excellent.
I emailed a query about choosing the particular dial and they responded quickly and helpfully. Giving me a choice by photographing what they had. This added 24 hours to my order time but I still got the watch within 48 hours of ordering. The packaging was really well done too and personalised with a nice note and even a biscuit. Lots of protection and then even nicer presentation. I've bought premium Swiss watches with less presentation flair.
Overall Seriouswatches made the whole process easy. Their prices seem very reasonably and their service is excellent. I shall be coming back!
