Sinn was founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn, an experienced pilot, as Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren.
History Sinn was founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn, an experienced pilot, as Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren. As you might expect the primary focus was watches especially suited for pilots. Sinn built up a good reputation during these early years and that is also why they survived the quartz crisis (and even purchased some rights from Breitling, as they were facing bankruptcy, which resulted in the iconic Sinn 903). In 1994 the company was purchased by Lothar Schmidt, who was working for the company. Under his leadership the company underwent several major changes and focused more on their in-house production and innovative technologies, while still maintaining its original design DNA. Mr. Schmidt remains a driving force to this day. Sinn watches have been over the world, from the deepest oceans to even higher than an average pilot could go (a Sinn watch was worn on the Mir-92 mission, but also on the STS-55 flight) to the arctic. Their proprietary technologies allow Sinn watches to meet these challenges.
Modern Times Sinn continues to implement new technologies. The list is nearly endless of small and big improvements. Great care is put into all the details and the designs remain aesthetically pleasing but also utilitarian. In 2017 Sinn opened their iconic 4650 square meter office building in Frankfurt am Main, to facilitate the growth and strength of the brand. Sinn has obtained a unique spot in the watch industry where they operate on a field between a niche, boutique brand and a mainstream brand, which allows them to have all the benefits of a bigger brand (scale, quality and facility) while still maintaining the feel and quality of a unique, personal product.
