Orient was founded in 1950 in Japan and has an incredibly rich history of watchmaking.
History Orient’s history dates back to 1901, when Shogoro Yoshida started selling imported pocket watches in Ueno, Tokyo. This grew into a watch company that formally launched as the Orient Watch Company Limited in 1950, with Orient Star following in 1951. By sticking to tradition while embracing innovation Orient has grown out into one of the biggest and richest Japanese watch companies. Orient produces their own movements, also known as ‘in-house’ movements, which means their designs and products are uniquely designed and produced in their own factories, rather than purchasing movements from other factories. This also enables them to continue their design DNA through all elements of a watch. You can instantly recognize an Orient watch, from all angles.
Modern Times As times change, so do companies and traditions. From the quartz crisis to fashion changes, Orient has always remained true to their pedigree, while not opposing change and innovation. Orient Watch Co. was incorporated by the Seiko-Epson group in 2009. This didn’t mean the end of the Orient tradition, however. While there are elements of cooperation, Orient and Orient Star continue to function separately from other watch brands within the group. As for Orient itself, it has made a clear distinction between the Orient and Orient Star models. Orient Star is aimed at a higher segment, with higher end techniques and movements, such as Zaratsu polishing and mechanical movements with moonphase complication. All models are produced in their factory in Akita, with their own designs, traditions and passion.
Why buy an Orient or Orient Star watch? SeriousWatches has been an authorised dealer of Orient and Orient Star watches for over a decade and it is one of the brands that demands the most respect. If you look at most watch brands you’ll see they excel in a single design style, but not produce their own movements nor have a rich history. However, Orient is one of the few companies capable of producing a wide range of top quality designs, throughout different price ranges, all the while using their own movements, factories and not deviating from their design DNA and embracing innovation. In the past 10 years Orient has improved their quality on all fronts – from a position of being a frontrunner and remaining at the top.
