A Monster is lurking! The watch enthusiast community likes giving nicknames to watches they like and this diving watch was quickly given the 'Monster' nickname upon release. While it may put you off at first, the watch is actually a very friendly wrist companion.
The Seiko Prospex Monster SRPH75K1 is the 4th generation model of this line and it has become a solid part of the affordable diving watch community. It's distinctive look has influenced many other brands and the original is going stronger than ever. The watch has very manageable dimensions, with a diameter of 42.4mm and a lug to lug distance of 49mm. Added in with a crown at 4 o'clock, a mere 13mm thickness and an elegantly shaped case, it actually wears very well on most wrists.
Of course a watch like this wouldn't be complete without a mechanical (automatic) movement. Seiko opted for the in-house Cal. 4R36, which features the day/date set-up that the model is famous for.
The SRPH75K1 goes beyond looks however, as it's also a very capable, legible diving watch. 200m water resistance, a sloping bezel with big notches (great for when you are wearing gloves!) and a sturdy bracelet, make it into a great, wrist companion on your underwater adventures.
This model is part of the 'Save The Ocean' line, of which Seiko makes several designs, in collaboration Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of the legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. A portion of the sales from these timepieces are donated to ocean conservation efforts.
Is this truly a monster? Based on everything it is more a sheep in wolf's clothing than anything else!
